The Antarctic Fur Seal (Arctocephalus gazella) was decimated by the sealing trade in the early 19th century, but has rebounded to a current population of perhaps 4 million. They breed on sub-Antarctic islands in November –December, living in colonies with dominant males acquiring harems of breeding females with their pups.
