Deception Island Sepia
Deception Island, in the South Shetland Islands, has been utilised by mankind since the 1820’s through to the 1960’s for various purposes, including sealing, whaling and research, by various nations. For more detail, see http://www.deceptionisland.aq/history.php.
I visited in 2004, and took some images of the historical buildings and relics left behind by the successive occupants. I used a Nikon Coolpix 885 (Wow, 3Mpix!!) carried in the external pocket of my jacket, producing some moisture/fog on the lens, hence the tasteful patches of blur in some pictures. Converting to sepia made them look much older. The solitary figure in several of them is not significant, other than for scale.
I've added some newer images of Deception Island, in colour, taken on subsequent visits to the island. Seeing the sepia and colour together gives an impression of a "then" and "now".
