Antarctic History
The “Big Four” of Antarctic exploration are Amundsen, Mawson, Scott and Shackleton, (in alphabetical order). Amundsen was first to the South Pole, Scott and his party died on the way back from the Pole, Mawson explored vast tracts of South Victoria Land, as well as producing a great tale of survival against the odds, and Shackleton briefly held the record for “Furthest South” before Amundsen and Scott reached the Pole. All four of these explorers achieved these feats around the Ross Sea, and the adventures of the four are intertwined.
